Education Requirements
An applicant is eligible for membership if he or she:
- holds a designation from the Insurance Institute of Canada (or its successor organization) as a CIP (Associate) or FCIP (Fellow), or
- holds a Canadian Risk Management (CRM) or Fellowship (FRM) diploma from the Canadian Risk & Insurance Management Society (or its successor organization) or an Associate in Risk Management (ARM) diploma from the Insurance Institute of America(or its successor organization) or (RF) RIMS Fellow.
- has such other experience and/or education background that in the opinion of the Board of Directors is satisfactory evidence of educational qualifications.
Experience Requirements
An applicant is eligible for membership if he or she:
- for three years or more in the five years immediately preceding the application has been engaged in public practice as a risk management consultant and in the opinion of the Board of Directors has a satisfactory level of competence, or
- for three years immediately preceding the application, has been engaged in risk management consulting under the supervision of a member, or
- for five years or more in the seven years immediately preceding the application has had major responsibility in the administration of corporate property/casualty insurance as a risk manager, a property-casualty insurance broker or an employee of a property-casualty insurer, and in the opinion of the Board of Directors has a satisfactory level of competence, or
- has such other combination of the above minimum experience requirements that in the opinion of the Board of directors is satisfactory evidence of experience qualifications, and demonstrates a satisfactory level of competence.
An applicant who does not meet the experience requirement or the education requirement is eligible for Associate membership if he or she acts under the direction and supervision of a member qualified under the Constitution.
An applicant who meets the experience requirement and the education requirement, but does not meet one or more of the other membership or financial responsibility requirements, is eligible for Associate membership if, in the opinion of the Board of Directors acting reasonably, his or her membership will contribute to or promote the practice of risk management and property-casualty insurance consulting.
In regard to both education and experience, an applicant who was in public practice as a risk management consultant and exempt from the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario Act as of October 1, 1981 is entitled to become a member upon application notwithstanding any education or experience requirement.
